Social-problems-sixth-editionThis is the new Sixth Edition of the text that is the #1 best-seller for the social problems course.

Available for Spring term courses!

This revision is available in a low-cost paperback print book format and also in the ultra-low cost digital format using the new Revel learning program. This is the social problems text that combines political analysis with sociological theory that empowers students to take part in the debates that define today’s world. This new learning tool has all the latest data on increasing economic inequality, the rapid change in laws supporting same-sex marriage, and also the trend toward legal use of marijuana. Every chapter is thoroughly updated and informed by hundreds of new research publications. All the new Revel learning material has been written by John Macionis (and not some non-sociologist vendor as with all other texts).

On behalf of our discipline, I continue to oppose the “outsourcing” of textbook supplements to “vendors” and people who are not sociologists! To “walk the walk,” I personally have written:

  • the Test Item File
  • the MySocLab learning material, including the learning assessment questions and Social Explorer discovery exercises
  • Annotations found in the Annotated Instructor’s Edition
  • the NEW Instructor’s Manual that includes my own teaching strategies, “close-up” discussion of selected chapter material, my own favorite video material, and plenty of additional supplemental lecture material

Sociology 15th edition offers an unsurpassed learning package to students and great support to my faculty colleagues. The many versions of the book provide you and your classes with the greatest level of flexibility to meet your specific needs. The new MySocLab also offers a full program of new videos and a full library of primary source readings, many of which I have keyed to the text chapters. Please check it out! This text remains the #1 best-seller.

A Note to My Colleagues:

Some Thoughts on Outsourcing and the New REVEL Learning Programs

The goal has always been quality without compromise. To achieve this objective, I am personally involved in all aspects of developing our texts. Beyond doing all the writing, I work on design and production, which includes the selection of all images. In addition, unlike other text authors, I personally write the supplements, including the test bank and instructor’s manual.

I have never permitted the publisher to “outsource” any of this work to grad students or people who are not sociologists. To me, doing the work myself is a matter of earning your trust and setting my own integrity—I will not just talk about quality, I need to walk the walk. You and I choose to do things ourselves because that way we know it gets done right.
